Next Stop, Alaska: A Night of Modern Luxury at Sea

The Alaska ship sails from Seattle. That is the easy part.


The harder question is whether the suite deck is actually worth it, so I asked Celebrity's own Alaska specialist to answer that one on the night, suite by suite, against a standard veranda. She was on these ships in May with a camera. The photographs you will see are hers rather than a brochure's.

THE SHIP & THE ROUTE

All three sailings are Celebrity Edge, roundtrip from Seattle. Two things on her come up on the night more than anything else.

The Ship: Celebrity Edge

  • The Magic Carpet: A cantilevered platform that moves up the side of the ship and reaches thirteen stories above the water. In Alaska it is where people stand to watch for whales.
  • The Infinite Veranda: Celebrity's name for a stateroom that opens to the open air at the touch of a button. It is a stateroom rather than a suite, and it is the room The Retreat gets measured against on the night.

The Route: Alaska, Dawes Glacier

Seven nights, roundtrip from Seattle, into Endicott Arm for Dawes Glacier.


  • The Route: Seven nights, roundtrip from Seattle, Washington. Out and back from the same pier.
  • The Shores: Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Icy Strait Point, then a call at Victoria before Seattle.
  • The Glaciers: Through the Inside Passage and into Endicott Arm, which is where Dawes Glacier is.

I design journeys worldwide for individuals, couples and families, whether the next one is a cruise or entirely on land. I am queer, I am married, and I run this the way I would want it run for me. Identity is part of the brief from the first conversation rather than something raised at the end. Not everyone needs that, and the ones who do should not have to ask.
